Evaluation and Treatment Plans
Pain and stiffness are the most common symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Symptoms tend to be worse in the morning or after a period of inactivity.
Viscosupplementation therapy is a procedure involving the injection of gel-like substances (hyaluronates) into a joint to supplement the viscous properties of synovial fluid. This procedure has been shown to be 86% successful in alleviating pain associated with osteoarthritis and is covered by most major medical insurance providers and Medicare.
Although there is no cure for osteoarthritis, Jena Medical Group has completed a comprehensive training regimen to become trained and certified in viscosupplementation procedures, which is FDA approved.
What Causes Osteoarthritis?
Causes of osteoarthritis are many and can include: joint injuries, obesity, inactivity, genetics, ethnicity, and aging. The inflammation in the joint can lead to bony changes and can also affect the muscles, ligaments, and lining of the joint. This can give the joints a knobby appearance, causing decreased range of motion, and lead to weakness of the limb.
Contrary to popular belief, this is NOT an inevitable part of aging. It does however affect hands, feet, back, hips, knees, and neck. The knee is one of the most commonly affected joints and can often make moving around difficult.
